Types and Properties of Plastics Used in Food Packaging

PoproCup’s Guide to Understanding Materials for Safe and Efficient Packaging

Plastic has long been one of the most widely used materials in the food packaging industry. Its combination of durability, light weight, cost-efficiency, and design flexibility makes it ideal for storing, protecting, and transporting food products at scale. However, not all plastics are the same — each type has unique properties that influence safety, recyclability, heat resistance, and performance.

At PoproCup, we carefully select plastic materials that meet strict food safety regulations, quality standards, and environmental criteria. Understanding these materials is essential for choosing the right packaging solutions. Below is an overview of the main types of plastics used in food packaging and their key characteristics.

1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE)

Key Properties:

  • Excellent clarity and gloss, ideal for showcasing food and beverages
  • Strong barrier properties against oxygen and moisture
  • Lightweight yet impact-resistant
  • 100% recyclable in most global recycling systems

Common Uses: Bottled beverages, salad containers, bakery packaging, cold drink cups.

PoproCup Insight: PET is a safe and visually appealing material, ideal for cold food and drink applications where presentation matters.

2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

Key Properties:

  • Strong and resistant to chemicals, moisture, and impact
  • Opaque appearance
  • Performs well at low temperatures (freezer-safe)
  • Widely recyclable

Common Uses: Milk jugs, yogurt tubs, bottle caps, freezer containers.

PoproCup Insight: HDPE is valued for strength and reliability, making it suitable for heavy-duty or refrigerated packaging.

3. Polypropylene (PP)

Key Properties:

  • High heat resistance, microwave-safe and dishwasher-safe
  • Lightweight and flexible yet durable
  • Excellent fat and grease resistance
  • Fully recyclable in many regions

Common Uses: Microwave containers, hot food trays, reusable cups, take-away boxes.

PoproCup Insight: PP is one of the safest and most versatile plastics, and is PoproCup’s primary material for microwave-safe and reusable containers.

4. Polystyrene (PS)

Key Properties:

  • Rigid, lightweight, and easy to mold
  • Can be made into foam (expanded polystyrene, EPS) or solid plastic
  • Good insulation for hot or cold foods
  • Limited recyclability

Common Uses: Disposable cutlery, foam cups, clamshell containers.

PoproCup Insight: PS is economical and offers good thermal properties, but due to recycling challenges, its use is gradually being replaced by more sustainable alternatives at PoproCup.

5. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

Key Properties:

  • Flexible, soft, and moisture-resistant
  • Low melting point
  • Commonly used for films and wraps
  • Recyclable, though less widely than PET or PP

Common Uses: Plastic wraps, squeeze bottles, lining films.

PoproCup Insight: LDPE is suitable for flexible applications and protective layers, especially where moisture protection is needed.

6. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) (Rarely Used Today)

Key Properties:

  • Strong and transparent
  • Excellent barrier against oil and moisture
  • Concerns about additives and safety in food contact
  • Difficult to recycle

Common Uses: Previously used in cling films and bottles, now largely phased out.

PoproCup Insight: Due to safety and environmental concerns, PoproCup does not use PVC in any food-contact products.

Choosing the Right Material: Key Considerations

When selecting plastics for food packaging, it is important to evaluate:

  • Food safety and regulatory compliance (EU, FDA certifications)
  • Heat and cold resistance for intended use (microwave, freezer, hot fill)
  • Barrier properties for shelf life and freshness
  • Recyclability and environmental footprint
  • Cost and availability for large-scale production

PoproCup’s product development process incorporates all these factors to deliver safe, high-performance, and environmentally responsible packaging solutions.
